With a fresh new take on the classic D12 that still inhabits most studios around the world, AKG are back with the AKG D12VR Bass Drum Mic. Leaning heavily on the originals look, you still get that distinctive two tone grill and dividing surround, but now in a more compact rectangular shape! Great for placing in and around your bass drum, the D12VRs thin diaphragm allows you to perfectly capture those low end frequencies that will give you a natural warmth in all of your recordings!

Here’s what AKG say about the AKG D12VR Bass Drum Mic

The D12 VR is a reference large-diaphragm dynamic microphone with cardioid polar pattern. Designed specifically for kick-drum recording applications, the microphone has a thin diaphragm to enhance the low frequency performance. Its warm sound is realized by the original C414 transformer, especially impressive at high signal levels.

The D12 VR features three active filter presets to match its sound shape with the kick drums character. When activated, the output level is automatically reduced by 10 dB. The filter settings can be controlled using a switch on the microphone body. Without phantom power, the microphone operates in passive mode and delivers the instruments pure sound.

Drum

A drum microphone is specifically designed to capture the sound of drums and other percussion instruments with clarity and precision. These microphones are built to handle high sound pressure levels, as drums can produce loud and dynamic sounds. Drum microphones often have a rugged construction to withstand the physical impact of live performances or intense recording sessions. They typically come in dynamic or condenser types, with dynamic microphones being commonly used for miking kick drums and toms due to their durability, while condenser microphones are often used for overhead miking to capture the cymbals and the overall drum kit sound. Drum microphone kits often include a combination of mics tailored to different drum components for a well-rounded sound capture.

Live Microphones

A live microphone is a microphone designed for use in real-time sound amplification during events like concerts, public speaking, or theatre performances. These microphones are built for durability to withstand the physical demands of live events, often featuring cardioid or supercardioid patterns to reject unwanted noise from the sides or rear. They are typically used to capture clear and focused sound, ensuring high-quality audio for both the performer and the audience, and are chosen based on their ability to handle varying sound levels and environmental conditions.

Mic

A mic is a common abbreviation for microphone, a device that converts sound waves into electrical signals for recording or amplification. Mics come in various types and designs—such as dynamic, condenser, ribbon, and lavalier—each suited to different applications, from live performances and studio recording to broadcasting and filmmaking. Choosing the right mic is essential for capturing clear, high-quality sound tailored to the specific environment and source.
