The RNR1 takes sE microphones design to the next level.
sE Electronics are well known for their good value, workhorse microphones, but more recently, they've been building up a new range of flagship microphones for top end studio owners with a little more budget to spend. With the RNR1, they've worked with analogue audio legend, Rupert Neve to make a rather special Ribbon microphone. The RNR1 is the first in a number of collaborative projects with sE Electronics and Mr Neve, so we expect to see more amazing mics like this coming through in the future.
Before designing the The RNR1 with sE, Rupert Neve already had some ideas on what he'd like to do with microphone electronics, and so working with a relatively small but successful mic brand was the perfect combination.
Traditional ribbon microphones have a warm, and natural tone with a high end roll off that's perfect for instruments like strings and brass, but often lacks high end definition for recording some instruments. Studio engineers often combine ribbon mics with a condenser, just to capture that high end detail. With the RNR1 Rupert Neve has created a new Ribbon microphone design with extended high frequency performance up to 24khz as well as better transient response whilst retaining the warm character associated with ribbon mics. As a result, the RNR1 is one of the most versatile ribbon mics available, so you can get that ribbon tone on more of your tracks.
The Ribbon capsule has a symmetrical figure-8 pattern with proximity effect and has a surprisingly low self-noise figure of 15dBA for a ribbon mic.
Here's what sE Electronics say about the RNR1
Siwei Zou first met Rupert Neve in 2004. In 2008, they began collaboration on an "impossible" microphone: an active ribbon mic with high-frequency response extending to an unprecedented 25kHz.
Using two of Rupert's custom transformers and highly specialized circuitry, the RNR1 captures more of your soundscape than any other ribbon in the world.
Though designed for high-fidelity applications like jazz and classical recordings, the RNR1 is equally at home in front of a kick drum or a roaring 130dB guitar cab.
