Ribbon microphones use a thin ribbon element to capture sound with a character that is often smooth, natural and sensitive to placement. Many passive ribbon designs have a figure-eight pattern and can suit guitar cabinets, brass, vocals, room recording and close or distant techniques; active ribbons may have different power and output requirements. Check the model’s phantom-power guidance, preamp gain, maximum level, ribbon protection, polar pattern and mounting. Avoid assuming every ribbon behaves identically: the circuit, transformer and intended distance determine how it fits a recording chain.
